EUROGRAPHICS 2000
=================

Global Challenges of the Information Society: A Web of Opportunity

First Announcement and Call for Contributions

Interlaken, Switzerland, 20-25 August, 2000

http://www.eg.org/eg2000/

IMPORTANT: In view of the Millennium holiday period at the end of the
year, the deadline for submitted papers is 10 DECEMBER 1999.

CONFERENCE THEMES
=================

As we enter a new Millennium, we are becoming increasingly aware of
the global nature of our profession, our industry and our very
existence. Advances in telecommunications and computer technology
such as the World Wide Web combine to blur and render obsolete at
least some of the traditional boundaries of the one world in which we
live. Computer graphics and related technologies have key roles to
play as we try to understand and harness the opportunities of this
new chapter of human history. It is against this background that the
theme chosen for Eurographics 2000 is 'Global Challenges of the
Information Society: A Web of Opportunity'.

Within this theme, there are three sub-themes: Visualization,
Modelling and Collaboration. All present challenges and opportunities
for researchers and practitioners in our field.

Conference Topics
-----------------

The Eurographics conference accepts papers from all areas related to
the discipline of computer graphics, from hardware, through novel
applications and algorithms, to human aspects of interaction with
graphics. In support of the overall conference theme, three sub-
themes have been selected as being of particular interest.

- Visualization: information, scientific, engineering, medical
- Modelling: humans, built-environments, natural phenomena, capture
methods
- Collaboration: behaviour, education, training, lifelong learning,
global workplace

Visualization methods help us see new opportunities in our knowledge
of the world. Modelling allows new worlds to be built and explored.
And collaboration is the means to share our insight, and in turn to
benefit from the knowledge of others.

VENUE
=====

Interlaken lies at the heart of Switzerland, between the lakes of
Brienz and Thun, near the base of the famous mountain trio Eiger,
M=F6nch and Jungfrau (hence three themes for the conference!). The
nearest airport is Berne, though Interlaken is within easy reach of
the major international airports in Geneva and Z=FCrich. Rail travel
from anywhere in Switzerland will be included in the conference
package. There is a direct service from Z=FCrich airport, with a
journey time of just over 2 hours, in modern, comfortable trains.
Interlaken is also well connected to the motorway network in
Switzerland.

The conference will be held at the Casino Kursaal, located in the
centre of Interlaken, just 10 minutes walk from the railway stations
and 5 minutes from the conference hotel, Hotel Interlaken. Other
hotels are situated very close to the Casino Kursaal. The Casino was
built at the turn of the century and has a distinctive Art Nouveau
style. The Casino has been extended in recent years to provide
additional conference rooms in a modern Swiss style, which blends
well with the Art Nouveau style of the main conference rooms which we
will also be using.

For more information about Interlaken and the Casino Kursaal, see
http://www.interlakentourism.ch.
