Shaping the Future: Best Practices in Higher Education

Are you involved with ongoing sustainability efforts on your campus?
Do you have practices that you would like to share with colleagues?
Are you looking for strategies and tools to strengthen your campus efforts?
If you answered yes to any of these questions then, Second Nature invites
you to take advantage of the Northeast Regional Workshop on Education for
Sustainability to bring a team to share and acquire "Best Practices" for
your campus. At this first in a series of convenings, you will take away
concrete ideas, effective tools and a new network of contacts to support
sustainability activities in all areas of your campus -- from curriculum
development to operations, research and community outreach. Special focus
areas for those interested include:
?transforming engineering education to make environmentally sustainable
design a foundation of learning and practice and
?how to reduce your institution's impact on climate change through
academics, operations and community interaction
Attend this event to:
--> SHARE your experience of moving a sustainability program forward on
campus
--> LEARN what has and has not worked at other institutions
--> DIALOGUE with influential leaders in the Education for Sustainability
movement
--> CREATE collaborations with colleagues from the region
--> STRENGTHEN your relationship with colleagues from your institution
--> IDENTIFY strategies to enhance your campus program
FEATURED SPEAKERS INCLUDE:
- Alan AtKisson, President, AtKisson & Associates
AtKisson writes and consults on sustainability. He has extensive
experience in developing indicators of sustainability -- improved measures
of social, ecological and environmental well-being.
- Jean-Lou Chameau, Dean of Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology
Georgia Institute of Technology is the first engineering school to make
sustainable technology and design a core element of their mission,
curriculum, research and work with communities.
- Anthony Cortese, President, Second Nature
In addition to co-founding Second Nature, Cortese was previously the Dean
of Environmental Programs at Tufts University and the Commissioner of the
Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection.
- Collette Hopkins, Partnerships Director, Historically Black Colleges and
Universities and Minority Institutions (HBCU/MI) Environmental and
Technology Consortium
Hopkins is leading an effort to form a national Higher Education Network
for Sustainability Educators (HENSE).
- Nan Jenks-Jay, Director, Environmental Planning and Affairs, Middlebury
College
Middlebury is offering unique programs that allow students to learn about
the relationship of humans to their environment in a liberal-arts
educational setting.
- William Moomaw, Director, Tufts University Institute for the
Environmental (TIE)
Moomaw will discuss a new energy and climate change initiative to make the
northeast a national leader in energy conservation and in meeting the Kyoto
Accords for reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
- Peter Senge, President of the Society of Organizational Learning, a
Massachusetts Institute of Technology affiliate.
Author of "The Fifth Discipline," Dr. Senge is one of the leading
scholar/practitioners in the world on organizational learning and
institutional transformation.
INSTITUTIONS REPRESENTED:
Some of the colleges and universities invited include: Brown University,
Columbia University, Connecticut College, Cornell University, Harvard
University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Middlebury College,
Smith College, Tufts University, University of Massachusetts and Yale
University. We hope to involve teams from each of these institutions and
will be pleased to include your institution, as well.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND:

This event is designed for the active participation of interdisciplinary
teams. Ideally, teams should consist of a minimum of three, up to a
maximum of five members. Team members may be individuals with whom you
have worked during the implementation of campus sustainability initiatives.
We also encourage you to find individuals from other departments or sectors
of your campus. Team members should be representative of your campus
system including faculty, administration, facilities personnel and/or
students.
Teams attending the workshop are requested to present a Poster describing
their institution's best practice. Poster criteria and guidelines for
presentation are available upon request. Information from the poster
presentations will be included in a widely-distributed workshop
proceedings.
WORKSHOP LOCATION:
This workshop will be held at the Trinity Conference Center, which is
located just over two hours from New York City in West Cornwall,
Connecticut. The Center is situated near the Housatonic River in the
foothills of the Berkshire Mountains. Delicious meals and coffee breaks
will be served in a relaxed style in the Riverview Dining Room overlooking
the Housatonic. The Center has recreational facilities, including a
fitness center, tennis, basketball and volleyball courts.
