Dear Brother Stephen,
Before the later Middle Ages, the Crusades provided an early
opportunity for devotion to St Anne in the Holy Land. There was
apparently a Benedictine nunnery attached to the Church of St Anne in
Jerusalem, which was patronized by Queen Melisende, whose sister
Yvetta became a nun there. See Jaroslav Folda, The Art of the
Crusaders in the Holy Land 1098-1187 (Cambridge, 1995), p. 131, with
further references.
Cheers,
Jim Bugslag
