Subject: Re: 21st century
Thank you all for your response. It is now clear to me that it is not clear
at all when the 21 Century starts. I find that all arguments are well
founded and should be considered, especially that of Joe Meert. Being from
Newfoundland and Labrador, a province divided in two by name, a stretch of
water, and a half hour time zone, it was loads of fun to celebrate the new
year twice on the water front in St. John's; once at 12 midnight local
time, and once at 12:30 (12:00 Labrador time).
Some people seem to think that the question is not important, but what is
then? Grain boundary migration under high fluid pressures? Fault bend
folds on Jupiter? Attending the last great geophysical meeting of the
century? Time, and our preception of it, is important not only in our
everyday lives, but also in our work. I could easily rephrase the question
to; when did the Devonian start? 408 Ma (GSA 1983 Geological Time Scale,
for example), or 418 Ma as Tucker et al. (EPSL, 1998, v. 158, p.175-186)
would have it?
Thank you again for your attention to my time consuming (I'll leave that
one alone) curiosity-driven question.
Sincerely
Dennis Brown
