2001/2002 : Frames of Viewing: Perception, Experience, Judgment

Purpose of the Fellowship

Predoctoral and Postdoctoral Fellowships provide support for emerging
scholars to complete their dissertation or expand it for publication.
Recipients of these fellowships are in residence from September 2000
to June 2002 at the Getty Research Institute. There they have an
extraordinary opportunity to pursue their own projects, make use of
Getty collections, join their colleagues in a weekly seminar devoted
to the scholar year theme, and participate in the intellectual life
of the Getty Center.

Eligibility

Applications are welcome from scholars of all nationalities who are
working in the arts, humanities, or social sciences. Predoctoral
fellowship applicants must have advanced to candidacy and expect to
complete their dissertations during the fellowship period.
Postdoctoral fellowship applicants must have received their degree no
earlier than 1994.

Terms

Predoctoral fellows receive a total stipend of $36,000 for the twenty-
two-month residency. Postdoctoral fellows receive a total stipend of
$44,000 for the twenty-two-month residency. Both fellowships also
provide an office at the Research Institute, research assistance,
travel funds, an apartment in the Getty scholar housing complex, and
health benefits. Neither fellowship is renewable.

Note: These fellowships are for those scholars who wish to be in
residence for both scholar years. The Getty Grant Program offers
separate nonresidential postdoctoral fellowships. Information is
