Theorists and philosophers working in the area of disability studies may
be interested in the Radical Philosophy Association. The RPA statement
reads, in part, "RPA members struggle against capitalism, racism,
sexism, homophobia, disability discrimination, environmental ruin, and
all other forms of domination." The members of RPA are an interesting
group with varying political and theoretical foci, linked by their
common commitment to social justice, globally and at home. RPA
considers the enterprise of radical philosophy inherently
interdisciplinary and welcomes persons not trained in philosophy.

The 4th Bi-Annual Radical Philosophy Association Conference will be held
in Chicago, Ill., at Loyola University, Nov 1-4, 2000. Work on
disability oppression has not been well represented in our association
to date, and RPA would very much like to remedy this gap. The call for
papers is contained in this e-mail. While individual paper submissions
are welcome, it would be wonderful to have folks come forward to propose
panels with a common theme in this area of work.

Please circulate the CFP widely.

Thankyou,

Joan Mason-Grant

RADICAL PHILOSOPHY AND POLITICS TO BEGIN A NEW MILLENNIUM

THE FOURTH BIANNUAL NATIONAL/INTERNATIONAL
RADICAL PHILOSOPHY ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE

NOVEMBER 1-4, 2000, LOYOLA UNIVERSITY, CHICAGO. USA

Our sense of radicalism has its origins in the eighteenth century. It
has also been shaped by the social movements of the twentieth century.
Yet, shouldn't this sense be revised as we turn a century and a
millennium facing as we do the collapse of the socialist project, the
debasement of democracy, orgies of cruelty, and the growing power of
surveillance and growing mass marketing? If it is to be revised, what
are the current struggles that are to inspire its revisions? How are
they connected to the economic, social, ecological, and political crises
that seem to be errupting globally? Might they suggest a framework to
counter neoliberalism and the attempts to institutionalize it globally?
How do they configure and how are they reconfigured by issues of race,
sexuality, gender? What is their relationship to the decline of the
importance of the nation-state on the one hand and the rise of
nationalism on the other? And, do they gesture at new ways to concieve
of human rights or peace?

Since the conference is being held in Chicago and Chicago has a rich
tradition of radical activism, we would like to encourage a look at that
heritage as a possible point of departure for discussions of the
questions raised for this conference.

Also, we would like to encourage creative alternatives to the standard
conference presentation. Please note that no one person will be given
more than one slot on the program. Please send paper, workshops, poster
sessions and other proposals to:

RPA Program Committee
C/O Bat-Ami Bar On
Department of Philosophy
Binghamton University (SUNY)
Binghamton, NY 13902-6000.

Proposals should be no shorter than 250 words and no longer than 500. If
a panel is proposed, please submit a 250--500 words description for each
presentation that is intended as part of the panel. Please take into
consideration the fact that sessions are one hour and a half long and
that there has to be enough time for discussion in every session (20-25
minutes at least).

Deadline for submissions is Monday, 31 January, 2000.

All submissions should be by snail-mail or fax (607) 777-2734. Please do
not e-mail submissions and do not submit complete papers. All late
submissions will be treated on a "first come first served" basis after
all other submissions have been screened and the program organized.
