I would like to draw your attention to a workshop being run by the Centre
for Evidence Based Medicine on the 9th and 10th October 1999. This
workshop is specifically aimed at pgea heads, clinical effectiveness
managers and those involved in primary care.
The workshop is being sponsored by Merck, Sharp and Dohme but MSD have in
no way influenced the programme.
The workshop is free as is the accommodation.
For further information plus application form please contact me at the
Centre. I would point out that time is getting short so if you are
interested a prompt reply is suggested.
Best wishes,
Olive

Dear Sir/Madam,
re: An EBM Workshop for PCG Leads and Clinical Effectiveness Managers
Clinical Governance, Budget Constraints and variability of care - with
limited resources in terms of time and money how does a PCG work through
all these problems effectively? One way to assist decision making for
PCG's is an Evidence Based approach. The two commonest comments to this
statement are "What is Evidence Based Practice?" and "We can't do all this
alone".
MSD have joined with the UK Centre for Evidence Based Medicine to provide
a solution to both these problems. A combined weekend workshop describing
the process of Evidence Based Practice while simultaneously faciliting the
sharing of ideas between PCG's.
The workshop is being facilitated by very experienced tutors in the field
of Evidence Based Practice. The workshop will use small group learning (10
participants and one tutor in each group) to work through the process of
Evidence Based Practice. This will cover question formulation, searching
techniques (with hands on teaching from librarians experienced in
teaching), and critical appraisal. The whole focus will be one of becoming
aware of the potential for using these methods in PCG decision making.
The workshop will include some time for relaxation - and is also an
opportunity to share ideas with other PCG' members.
So should you come?
If you are involved in co-ordinating strategies for the PCG, providing
information for PCG's, determining provision of diagnostic tests and
therapies, or involved in audits for PCG's then this weekend is for you.
What will I gain?
An overview of the potential for an evidence based approach to your
decision making
An awareness of the process of evidence based practice
An appreciation of the need for evidence based practice
An sharing of solutions for information needs of PCG's
Enclosed please find a programme and an application form. If you are
interested in attending please return application form to Olive Goddard,
Centre Manager, here at the Centre for Evidence Based Medicine.
