University of Central England in Birmingham
offers the following degree programme:

BA(HONS) INFORMATION STUDIES PROGRAMME
The degrees in this programme may be taken by part time or full time study.

There are four degrees in the programme and they are designed to be
mode neutral.  This means that students may complete a degree over a period
to suit their circumstances.  Normally, a full time student will complete a
degree
in three years.  A part time student will normally complete a degree in
five years
but must complete within ten years.

The programme builds on a common core of modules, concentrated mainly in
the
first stage (level 1).  Level 1 modules are designed to develop the skills
necessary
to succeed in higher education and enable students to explore the content
of the
programme.  All degrees include a substantial grounding in information
technology
and research skills, problem solving and project management.

Many of the skills and abilities gained on these courses will be
substantial
preparation for those wishing to develop a career in knowledge management.

Mode of attendance

As the programme is mode neutral, applications are accepted for both
part time and full time attendance.  There are vacancies on the programme
for both modes of attendance.

The Information Studies degree and the Multimedia, Communication and
Culture
degree may be of particular interest to members of these lists.

BA(HONS) INFORMATION STUDIES.

This degree provides a thorough grounding in theoretical principles of
information,
its structure, management and provision.  Also, the principles of
information service
evaluation, design, establishment and management are fundamental studies.
Students who graduate with this degree will be high level generalists,
capable of
entering any situation in which information is critical to success.  They
will have had
the opportunity to study modules from a range that includes information
systems
construction, information users, scientific and technical information,
health information,
pharmaceutical information, information and knowledge audit, knowledge
representation,
knowledge management, subject structure theory, records management and
managing electronic information sources.

Careers.  The range of possible employment of these graduates will be wide
and include
legal, architectural, scientific, health, pharmaceutical, and management
information
services and systems, and research environments in which the provision of
accurate,
current and precise information is highly valued and critical to success.

BA(HONS) MULTIMEDIA, COMMUNICATION AND CULTURE.

Graduates with this degree will have a broad knowledge of multimedia and
communications and their significance in a cultural context.  Additionally,
they will be
able to analyse and synthesise knowledge and information from widely
differing
situations, and design and provide services and systems to support
information
users working in these situations.  The range of modules available for
study on this
degree includes publishing, media engineering and design, structure and
control
of British media, multimedia publishing, electronic writing, popular
periodicals
information, heritage information, and multimedia indexing.

Careers.  Graduates will be prepared for opportunities such as Webmaster,
Internet consultant, cybernaut and network navigator and for emerging posts
in
electronic commerce, for example, the construction and maintenance of
Internet
based product directories.  Those with a flair for design will find jobs
becoming
available in web page design and in database design, construction and
networking.
Further employment areas will include media planning, multimedia research
and
development, and traditional and electronic publishing.
