COURSE ANNOUNCEMENT UNIVERSITY OF GREENWICH
PART-TIME & FULL-TIME
The Languages Unit at the university of Greenwich is offering an
interdisciplinary MA in Management of Language Learning
If you are:
a practising language teacher with teaching experience
a language trainer, adviser or a specialist in the field of languages
a graduate in languages or related topics
If you want to:
make an effective contribution to language learning in your
organisation through research, development and the application of
newly acquired knowledge
understand the issues facing language teachers/lecturers at the
beginning of the new century
enhance your career prospects in Further and Higher Education
The Languages Unit has developed this MA course to suit your
needs which is now recruiting its third intake for September 1999.
This interdisciplinary programme is offered part-time and
full-time. It aims to:
. introduce you to research in language learning, in particular those
research activities and themes that impinge on the language learning
environment: second language acquisition, language testing and
communicative language learning.
. help you explore the interface between research in language learning
and the practical learning environment.
. develop IT skills to enable you to evaluate, develop and
integrate computer-assisted language learning tools into the language
curriculum.
. develop an awareness of non-traditional (i.e. not classroom
teaching) methods of language learning, particularly RBL or open
learning, to enable you to manage language learning effectively.
. help you build management skills relevant to languages professionals
in Higher/Further Education and training.
Programme
The programme is divided into six core units to provide you with a
common theoretical background and a dissertation which will give you
the opportunity to demonstrate your ability to carry out applied
research in languages.
The core units are:
1. Second Language Acquisition. (2 sem)
2. Information Technology in Language Learning (1 sem)
3. Current Methodologies in Language Teaching and Testing (1 sem) 4.
Issues in Management of Languages(1 sem) 5. Research Methodology (1
sem)
Dissertation: 12,000 to 15,000 words.
The teaching will normally take place on Wednesday.
Assessment
The programme is assessed by written assignment, oral presentation and
a dissertation.
