Dear Discussion Group Members,
Please find below the first announcement of the inaugural Individualized
Funding and Self Determination Conference, to be held in Seattle next year.
Michael Bleasdale
Announcing the First International Conference on Individualized Funding &
Self-Determination, July 29-31 2000, Seattle, Washington, USA.
This conference, which will have a cross disability focus, will be held
from July 29 - 31, 2000 in Seattle, Washington at the Westin Seattle Hotel.
It will be allied with the International Association for the Scientific
Study of Intellectual Disabilities' Year 2000 Congress which will follow on
August 1 - 6, 2000 in Seattle.
During the past decade individualized funding and self-determination have
become focal points for the world-wide disability movement. Individualized
funding is now recognized as a fundamental requirement for
self-determination, enabling people to purchase, and therefore gain control
over, the supports needed to enjoy meaningful lives in the community.
This International Conference on Individualized Funding and
Self-Determination will provide a forum for:
¨ sharing experiences and lessons learned from the many demonstration
projects and
¨ research initiatives that are underway around the world;
¨ discussing the critical political, policy and implementation issues;
¨ participating in international consensus building activities to arrive at
a shared view of the fundamental principles and critical components of
individualized funding and self-determination;
¨ building collaborative partnerships that will energize the international
movement in the new millennium.
Over 1,000 people from around the world are expected to participate
including people with disabilities, family members, community advocates,
professionals, service providers, researchers, administrators, and
government officials. The conference will be rich in opportunity
and outcomes, with topics and speakers being sufficiently broad enough to
encourage participation from other sectors including the independent living
movement, seniors, and people involved in the mental health movement.
