Post: Research Officer
Salary: £19,915 per annum
Duration: Temporary contract for 18 months
Location: Family Policy Studies Centre, London
Start date: 1st October 1999
________________________________________
The Family Policy Studies Centre is an independent,
non-aligned Centre, contributing to the public debate and
policy discussion about families in Britain through the
provision of research-based information and analysis.
It works closely with practitioners and policy-makers, in
the statutory and voluntary sectors.
Earlier this year, the Centre for Population Studies, the
London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in
collaboration with Family Policy Studies Centre was
successful in its application to the Economic and Social
Research Centre (ESRC) for funding a major new study on
grandparenting. The study will collect new information on
the extent of grandparenting and its importance for the life
satisfaction of older people.
Family Policy Studies Centre wish to recruit a research
officer to join the team of researchers working on this
project. In addition the research officer will contribute
a small percentage of their time (around 25%) contributing
to other work of the Family Policy Studies Centre. This may
include carrying out initial literature reviews, data
entry, data analysis, qualitative research on issues
relating to family policy (such as cohabitation) and
authoring articles, reviewing books etc.
The post is initially offered as an 18 month contract, but
it may be possible to extend the duration.
We are seeking someone with a good social-science
based degree and a firm understanding of social research
methodologies and their application. Ideally the applicant
will be analytically- minded, have a broad understanding and
some experience of both quantitative and qualitative
research methodologies. The post holder will be familiar
with quantitative data entry and analysis as well as
qualitative interviewing and analysing skills. The
applicant must have proven written skills and be a good
communicator. It is important for the post-holder to work
flexibly in a small organisation as part of a team, but we
are also keen to employ someone who works well
independently, when necessary. An interest in social
policy, and in issues associated with the ageing process
would be desirable.

for an application pack. The closing date for
applications is 1st September 1999. If you would like to
