I am considering undertaking a qualitative study of the messages given by
questions and problems in text books and exam papers about people from
different ethnic backgrounds. I have found that Jean Northam (1983) and
Valerie Walkerdine (1985) have undertaken work about the messages that
maths texts give about gender. I have also found that Dowling P (1996)
has undertaken qualitative analysis of the messages given to the reader
by maths texts. However I have not found any work which focuses
specifically on ethnicity or exam questions. Has anyone come across such
work or does anyone have any pointers?
