St Erkenwald is the patron saint of London. He was not the most popular or
miraculous of saints, despite a concerted and sustained PR campaign on his
behalf. His body was enshrined in St Pauls Cathedral and may well have
survived the reformation because the structure was only lost in the fire of
1666. Hollar produced a picture of it.
I recently read that in a list of relics, reliquaries and things of value
from Lincoln Cathedral, there was a relic (i.e. a body part) of St
Erkenwald. Given the jealousy with which the Dean & Chapter of St Pauls had
hung onto their patron saint in the first place, is there any record of how
this came to Lincoln? Was there a trade in relics in the same way that
footballers are transferred now?
Any news on the books of hours?
Regards,
John Lock
