When I was trying to research the early London gas industry I was being
driven to despair trying to compare prices and weights of various items
- coal, coke, tar and ammoniacal liquor. I am sure that somewhere - I
can't find it now in my notes - that I have seen Newcastle bushels
mentioned as being different from London! 'on the quay at Newcastle'
was the measure, as I remember. Anyway, the following are a list of
measures for tar and coal which I found. These all date from between
1810 & 1850.
ton
barrel
gallon beer measure
butt of 108 gallons
bushel of coal of 84 lbs
imperial BUSHEL
imperial measure casks
gallon wine measure
