Bill White's Death Ruled Accidental
Staff Reports
The death of Bill White, who won the right to end his life after living
more than 30 years at Strong Hospital, has been officially ruled an
accident.
The Monroe County Medical Examiner's Office determined that White, 50,
died of a severe neck injury, the same one that paralyzed him in a
gymnastics accident at Greece Olympia High School in 1967.
White, who could only move his head slightly, remained alive the past 32
years with the aid of a ventilator that helped him breathe. Medical
examiner officials said the ventilator only postponed his inevitable
death.
White in recent months had asked to have the ventilator removed so he
could die. Monroe County District Attorney Howard R. Relin determined
that White had received appropriate counseling and said the law allows a
patient to discontinue treatment,
White died Friday evening.
