Hi everyone,
In light of some recent events involving anonymous postings to the list
the 'listowners' feel it may be useful to remind ourselves of a few things
about the list.
The c-g-f Introduction document includes the following:
"Critical Geography Forum is an international discussion group
... to share ideas, raise questions, provide answers and air opinions
... a network of geographers and others which seeks to promote:
a) the development and dissemination of critical and radical perspectives
in geography and related disciplines;
b) critical and radical research, publication and educational activities
undertaken by geographers;
c) links between academic geographers and radical political activists and
activities;
d) equality of opportunity;
by, among other things,
i) enabling communication and debate between geographers in all kinds of
educational and research institutions, between geographers and others
in related disciplines, and between academics and the wider community;
ii) supporting the work of marginalised and under-represented groups in
geography;
iii) campaigning for reform in educational and academic institutions;
iv) emphasising work which improves understanding of, and seeks to combat,
unequal and oppressive power relations;
v) highlighting ethical and political issues in the practice of
geographical research and education."
Thus, this unmoderated list, with its relatively 'open' policy on postings
is intended to promote open, tolerant and respectful discussion. This does
require that we all respect each other and differing viewpoints.
Anonymous mail
--------------
The general policy is that anonymous postings are unnecessary and are not
permitted. If a situation arises when anonymity is necessary, please
contact the listowners who shall be able to assist.
List owners
-----------
The (currently 3) listowners do not 'run', moderate or control the forum.
Basically, all we do is maintain the list in a fairly informal manner. We
exercise no editorial control or regulate membership. Rather, our role is
more as facilitators rather than gatekeepers.
We want to encourage critical thinkers drawing on any and all theoretical,
methodological and conceptual approaches to contribute to the list. In
order to ensure that the list offers space for participation by all
members, we need to ensure that people do so in a manner that is
considerate to others.
