Interesting tale of the use of the sign of the cross told in, I believe, the
life of St. Columba: the man of god is writing a manuscript (!!), intent upon
his work, when a fellow monk comes in holding a knife and
asks him to "Bless this object which I hold, Father."
Which Columba does, making the sign of the cross without looking up.
The monk leaves, and Columba asks his fellow worker what it was that he
blessed.
When told that it was a knife, perhaps C. says a prayer or something (thirty
years--I can't recall).
In any event it turns out that the knife, which was used to kill and butcher
cows, was so dull that it would no longer harm any living creature.

Thanks, but I'm trying to quit.
Best from here,
Christopher
