Check Vergil, Aen. 6.237-242:
Spelunca alta fuit, vastoque immanis hiatu,
scrupea, tuta lacu nigro nemorumque tenebris:
quam super haud ullae poterant impune volantes
tendere iter pinnis: talis sese halitus atris
faucibus effundens, supera ad convexa ferebat.

There's a couple of pages of commentary on this passage in E. Norden's
edition of Aen. VI, with citations of previous sources (Eur., Apoll. Rhod.
et al.). (The line in square brackets is spurious, acc. to Norden.)
