Boy-lots of 'them vs us' (fill in the blanks for them and us) and
personal agendas here. I'll throw another brick at the social model
here. To me, a polio survivor, it seems to me that the social model is
often used (probably wrongly) to enable the transfer of all of our
difficulties, problems, and some responsibilities to society's or
'THEIR' inbasket. Convienient, but not that productive.
I see the social model, as I attempt to understand it, as a tool to
illustrate how mainstream society can make our lives unneccessarily
complicated and limited. I don't consider it to be the 'holy grail' of
theories. I would prefer to have the dead nerves back or 'repaired',
thank you.
I think the parents' input is very meaningfull in these discussions.
Some times the thread of 'independance and self determination' runs
overboard and completely ignores the facts of the situations for some
PWDs (I prefer to use this because it's all inclusive and 'SHORT'
without being patently offensive.) Some people will never be able to
experience the degree of independence that I have; some will experience
more. That's reality and no device of intellectual arguement will make
some things vanish.
