Good question Tim.
I think Simon Carley has given a very good review of
most of the options.
I must admit I would agree. The clean 2 year option is
much the best for the researcher. No chance of being
dragged this way and that. That of course is also
reliant upon a good supervisor..... which along with
funding is a bit of Yeti hunt nowadays.
The four year programme sounds attractive in some ways
but its a rare character that will sign up for
that....too much time for life events to intervene.
Its bad enough trying to get somebody to sign up for
two years.
The MSc for one year should be particularly attractive
for most trainees interested in a bit of research in
the immediate future (3-5 years at least). We should
be looking to integrate these into a number of the
teaching hospital posts with an NTN.
I believe the concept of research attachments is being
mooted by certain members of the Faculty but getting a
proper research environment is perhaps the first and
more important though faltering step for institutions
to be taking.
I think I will stop now before I get too cynical....
