Subject: Re: Ethnograph v5.0
I echo the the last suggestion - lets make a discussion about the Ethnograph
PUBLIC rather than private - since it IS a fairly new software and doesn't
get talked about enough.
In continuing the discussion I shoudl point everyone interested at the web
site for T.E and Qualis Research -
http://www.QualisResearch.com/index.html
for those who are not familiar with T.E. 5.0 there are considerable
resonances in this version with version 4 - a lot of people like the way
that
was; - the first software to provide us with 'code-mapping' for instance.
Well this version has quite a few new tools - some drag and drop coding - a
nice editor window that you can just drop word processed data into, as a way
of importing data - to mention just two.
A _lovely_ manual or users guide which is a good introduction to
qualitative data analysis per se - whilst using software.
I would still tend to say its a software package which is better at handling
not too large datasets, and better with an approach which does not require
too much intensive coding -(if you are going to rely on the code mapping
facility a lot) - re this, John Seidel woudl probably agree with me (in fact
he probably said it first).
I have feeling he has deliberately resisted 'autocoding' - (e.g. after a
text search) - since his own approach has always been dare I say it more
careful; and his coding processes are always generated by what he reads and
interprets from the data - rather than any 'shortcutting' (well in terms of
the initial coding process anyway) - do correct me if I am wrong John.
It woudl be nice to get some substantive experience re The Ethnograph talked
about - mine is rather superficial and I have to say I haven't tried the
software with the recent patches.
cheers
