I have been a passive observer of the DC discussion thread for several
months. Recently, Alex Satapra wrote:
"Sure DC will take off. But which version of DC? DC as you know it, or
MS-DC as Microsoft will develop for? Witness HTML vs MS-HTML, continuing
changes in SMB to keep Samba incompatible with Windows NT, and Java vs J++."
Further witness how MS has appropriated a lead role in XML development,
and is currently snarfing up equity or partnership stakes in all sorts
of XML tools developers and consultancies. This bodes ill for the future
of this open standard, much in the same way Mr. Satapra refers to
MS-HTML, etc. And there's nothing anyone can do to derail the MS train
in this regard: they will develop their own standards come hell or high water.
IMHO, it would behoove the best interests of the DC community to find a
counterbalance to MS involvement in DC. The Sun-Netscape alliance
("Sunscape") might logically play a role here. Both are trying to play
catch-up on the XML front--at least Sun is. I'm not certain of
Netscape's plans, but their relationship with America OnLine would
suggest that content meta-data must be on their radar.
Sun's XML leader is Jon Bosak. I believe his email is [log in to unmask]
Could a well placed email from others more accomplished and articulate
