Obscene Powers: Corruption, Coercion and Violence
11-12 December 1999, John Hansard Gallery Southampton University
The final years of the millennium have seen the extension of corporate
control, the escalation of military conflicts, the intensification of
systems of surveillance and the proliferation of political and business
scandals. These developments, and others, have led many to conclude
that contemporary configurations of power pose an increasing threat to
social justice, human rights and democratic decision making.
Relatedly, contemporary manifestations of ethnic, racial and sexual
violence have led scholars from a wide range of disciplines to claim
that the relation between power and violence needs to be given far
greater consideration. The international multidisciplinary conference
will examine how power and violence regulate identity, frame fantasies,
and produce forms of resistance. By exploring the modalities of
corruption, the mechanisms of coercion and the generation of violence
this event will seek to identify new ways in which abuses of power
might be opposed.
