Dear list
I attended WCPT Congress at Yokohama,Japan on 26th and 27th of May.
I had following impressions.
1.It was a great pleasure to meet PTs--Peter,Mr.Mak--who kindly responded
my question before, not in cyber space but in real world.
2.An PT from U.K. said that he had a deep impression at Opening Ceremonies,
because the Emperor and Empress of Japan attended there and that this was
the first time for the history of WCPT Congress.
Although I usually speak ill of Japanese physiotherapy,no I have only tried
to tell the truth,I must praise that Japanese WCPT '99 organizing commitee
made a big job and give many thanks to all the staff of this Congress.
3.I attended IPPA(International Private Practice Assosiation) workshop.
As you know,Japanese PT cannot do private practice and has not competency
for it.While I heard speakers explain their situations in their country,
I felt they seemed to be above a cloud and we Japanese PTs on the ground.
I keenly felt the delay of Japanese physiotherapy.
But a kind PT from U.K. talked to me that western countries' physiotherapy
had a history more than 100 years, though that Japanese one had only 35 years.
There was a same situation as Japanese one in western countries 100 years ago.
4.The difference of the speaker's attitude between the Japanese PT and the U.S.
I attended a platform presentations,where a Japanese PT who was well-known
in a specific field in Japan but couldn't speak English well,I know, was
waiting his turn.He seemed to be felt uneasy and looked around.I guessed he
would be anxious if difficult questions would be asked in addition to language
problem. This is seen often in domestic congress in Japan.
Generally Japanese people dislike to disgrace himself in public.
On the contrary a U.S.PT who intended to be a speaker of seminar said to me
that she was looking forward to speaking at the seminar tomorrow.
This difference arise from the fact that Japanese culture is a culture of
a shame,I suppose.
5.I felt my poor ability of English.
Speechs with the technical terms in a high tempo were hard to be understand.
I think I must be able to read English text easily at least before I attend
overseas course or congress.
Best regards,
Hiro Wood
