As someone with 8 years of anaesthetic experience I don't get that sort of
complaint! However, it is something that needs to be addressed positively.
Often people simply do not realise that adequate skills exist in other
areas. You are working as a locum, and this is not a position of strength
for this sort of discussion, which really needs to be sorted at Consultant
level. Were there genuine concerns about the way the patient was managed?
What are they objecting to? If they have valid concerns about the
management then those must be addressed and acknowledged before the
discussion can move on. If they cannot fault the A&E management then they
clearly need to be educated in what can be done - we have had a similar
sort of turf war with our cardiologists and they now accept we can manage
these patients properly.
