The Freie Universitaet Berlin (Germany) has the pleasure to offer to you an
International Summer University courses in Political Sciences on
"Berlin: East meets West"
The International Summer University will take place from July 31st through
August 27th 1999.
This course will be taught by our faculty member Prof. Dr. Ralf Rytlewski.
The language of instruction will be English.
Course description:
Berlin is an extreme example of rapid urban growth during the late
19th
century. This rapid growth was primarily due to industrial expansion
but it
was conditioned by the political structure of the newly-founded
German
Empire. Berlin started to change tremendously and continuously when
Germany's political order was attacked and interrupted several times
during
the 20th century. The success of German democracy which grew out of
German defeat and revolution was interrupted in 1930 due to the
broadening anti-parliamentary consensus resulting from the impact of
economic depression and Hitler's nationalist agitation. In May 1945,
the
Thousand Year Reich lay in ruins. Berlin lost all of its political
functions. The
"gentle revolution" in East Berlin and East Germany from August to
November 1989 inaugurated a process of definite change in the
post-Yalta-world: the dismantling of the Iron Curtain between the two
Germanys, the destruction of the Berlin Wall, and the subsequent
unification
of the former Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic
Republic.
Following unification, Berlin became the center of a new "common
European house". Within the next several years, the Federal
Government
and Federal Parliament will move from Bonn to booming Berlin. This
will
be a new beginning for Berlin as a capital, as a bridge between
Western
and Eastern Europe, and as an intellectual and cultural metropolis.
Here all
the problems of integrating East and West can be found to an extreme
extend: a European city in transformation.
Excursions are planned to historical institutions and places (e.g.
the
Reichstag, the Potsdamer Platz), museums (Checkpoint Charlie, the
German Historical Museum) as well as to various other points of
special
interest.
The tuition for this course is DM 1,200.-. There is an additional onetime
registration fee of DM 150.-. Besides the above mentioned course we offer 14
other fully-credited courses covering topics on Berlin, Germany, and Europe.
