Hello,
I only started studying archaeology in Sept. 98. As someone who has studied
social and economic history i think that with the advent of computers that
many historians are able to deal with a lot more data than previously. They
are coming up with a lot more materail about "us little people" as opposed
to kings and queens and their dynasties. As time goes on i think that we
will probably work more closely with them, as we do with anthropologists
now. it has to be a two way thing though.
The big difference i have noticed is that the study of "history" is how an
historian interprets the data, ie if you can make a good case that is
opposite to the prevailing theoris you can publish a book .whereas i was a
bit startled when i came to writing essays in archaeology on how little
there was published to help us who are just starting out. Which is why i
joined the net.
Although i havn't come across anything yet that is wholely relevant i have
been hugely entertained by the star-trek debate. It occurs to me that maybe
us archaeologists are trying to dig up god, and that many of us who enjoy
sciencefiction are looking for him out there too. Is it a race to who finds
him first. or who will be able to say that there is no trace of it
anywhere.
I rush to say that i have no particular preference either way. just a
thought.--Original Message-----

Subject: historians and historical archaeology
just something that came up in relation to a lecture by a historian here in
dresden: just how much interplay is there between historians and
archaeologists
elsewhere? as in: do the historians use our information or otherwise take us
seriously, or do they just sort of continue plodding along with their
documentary evidence r.e. founding of towns/cities/whatever, regardless of
what
our evidence says to the contrary?
