CALL FOR PAPERS

        Projections: MIT Student Journal of Planning

 The inaugural issue of Projections will focus on the
measures taken by planners to address the serious
urban
problems of cities- 'crisis cities'. In this era of
rapid technological and social change, older cities in
developed countries are often left behind. Their
problems have grown more and more serious as
segregation, suburbanization, and deindustrialization
have taken their toll. For these cities, urban
planning offers one of the best ways to find a way out
of the urban crisis. How are planners and other
policymakers addressing crisis cities? What hope does
planning offer these often deeply troubled
places? How do crisis cities learn from the experience
of other cities?

This first issue will build off questions raised
through an MIT seminar and symposium held on the topic
of crisis cities this Spring.Some of the themes that
we
invite prospective authors to address are:
analysis of the framework of options available to
planners in crisis cities; investigation of the
origins
or efficacy of particular planning strategies
undertaken in crisis cities; study of the trends
influencing crisis cities and the effects of these
trends on the city.We encourage authors to focus on
the
role of planners in the responses to the problems of
crisis cities.


Purpose
The discipline of urban planning encompasses elements
of a broad range of disciplines, drawing upon theory
and practice in architecture,economics, environmental
policy, and sociology. In recent decades the
profession has become increasingly atomized,
reflecting
a drift away from the place-based nature of urban
planning. A refocusing of the profession on the
amelioration of place-based problems will
reintegrate the varied strains of the discipline and
reorient planners toward solving the many pressing
problems facing urban settlements
worldwide.

Projections: Perspectives on Place is a new journal
produced by students in the Department of Urban
Studies
and Planning at the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology. As befits the diversity of
interests of the student body and faculty, we seek to
involve planning experts and students from across the
spectrum of the discipline, but with a concentration
on
the place-based nature of planning. As a
student-edited publication, we especially encourage
the
participation of planning students both in the United
States and around the world.


Format and Guidelines
        Projections seeks exploration of planning
themes through a variety of formats. Two categories of
articles will appear in each issue of
Projections. General articles will often be
commissioned by the Editors, but submissions are
welcome. They may include surveys of
current research or practice; commentaries; essays;
and
book reviews. Research articles are expected to
contain
new data and ideas. They should be well-referenced and
should be 4,000 words or under in
length. Photographic and multimedia submissions are
also encouraged and may be published online or in
print.

Manuscripts should be submitted in English in word
processor format (MS Word preferred) and sent on paper
and on disk to:

Illustrations should be submitted electronically in
TIFF, JPEG or EPS format. All manuscripts must include
a title page which contains the title of the paper;
the
name, address, telephone and fax number,
and the email address of the author to whom
correspondence is to be addressed. An abstract of not
more than 100 words should accompany
each research article.

Submissions must be received by July 1, 1999.
Prospective authors will be notified of the acceptance
and possible revisions needed for their article by
