I hesitate to open up discussion of language yet AGAIN, but it does
seem to come back to that, doesn't it?
The local Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts describes an
outreach (actually "artreach") program in this way:
they work "to annually distribute more than 7,000 otherwise unsold tickets to
individuals with physical, mental and economic disabilities." (my italics)
While I understand their meaning and appreciate the economy of
language, I'm a bit disturbed. It seems to me this clouds understanding of
our sense of disability and perhaps insults the economically disadvantaged.
Maybe it's just too cute. Any other opinions? And any other examples, not
counting the political correctness jokes?
Sincerely,
