I would say that there are several themes frequently dealt
with in StarTrek which are of interest to archaeologists and
ethnographers...
The interaction between cultures
The need to limit intervention and imposition of values by
one culture upon another
The importance of different levels of technological
development
Speculation on possible forms society may take
Many of the fictional races in StarTrek have
characteristics based on archaeological and historical
cultures..for example the Romulans (among whom ranks
include centurion and tribune)have a martial society based
upon thta of the Romans. Archaeology is also frequently
referred to in both the series and the books as it is a
hobby of captain jean-Luc Picard
Perhaps this discussion is not particularly academic but it
is certainly not irrelevant
