I cannot guarantee that this is correct, but I recall reading somewhere
that the names Slav and Serb derive from the same roots as the words
slave and servile, and that that came about because neighbouring peoples
(Rus, Vikings ?) used to raid those regions to seize slaves at some period.
I wonder if that is accurate and true, or an example of myth ?
