Well, I'm 50 years old, Dan, and, for better or worse, have never seen an
episode of ST. Nor Indiana Jones. Nor Lara Croft. I wasn't offended
by your robust response, so I don't personally require any apology.
I find the connections between modern culture and myth making, and our
various conceptions of the past, and ancient or obsolete myths, is deeply
fascinating, and I was hoping for some stimulating discussion and insight.
It's a pity that the topic got contaminated by the highly emotive reference
to the tragedy in the Balkans.
I felt that the inference that discussing 'soap opera' somehow implied that
individuals on this list might be unaware,or unconcerned, about the ongoing
horror and suffering in the world, was somewhat insulting. I don't watch tv,
and one of the reasons is that I find it very hard to cope with the rapid
juxtaposition of, for example, a child dying of starvation, and an advert for
bubble bath liquid. Perhaps it was that type of contrast which upset C.
Cumberpatch.
I read a piece somewhere recently, about Silicon Valley, as being a place/
culture which denies the past, and which does not look back, and thought how
strange that must be.
Chris.
