Issue Six of Internet Archaeology is now online at
http://intarch.ac.uk/journal/issue6/index.html
Issue Six sees another landmark for Internet Archaeology - the issue is
themed and every paper will focus on digital publication and the impact
that the web and other technologies are having on archaeological
publication and practice.
Number 6 opens with three very different papers on the potentials and
the problems that the Internet and hypertext have for the discipline. The
first is by Ian Hodder called 'Archaeology and global information systems'
and refers to the on-going work at Catalhoyuk in Turkey and the role the
Internet can play in the dissemination and construction of archaeological
knowledge.
The second is an article by Cornelius Holtorf called 'Is History
going to be on my side? On the experience of writing and submitting a
hypermedia Ph.D. thesis' - a personal insight into the processes that lie
behind academic writing, with a discussion on the new dimensions that
hypertext can add to the archaeological text. This piece is also a working
example of how hypertext may be used more radically than is often seen
on the web at present.
The third paper is by Vince Gaffney and Sally Exon and considers the
shifting nature of archaeological publication and in particular how BUFAU
(Birmingham University Field Archaeology Unit) are utilising digital
technology both in the field and in education.
Should you have any responses or contributions to make to the debate on
where the digital age is leading archaeology, or where archaeology should
be leading technology(!), then do join in using the intarch-interest list
(details at the url below), or you could even submit a more formal
response as an article to the journal.
We look forward to hearing from you!
Judith
