I too find this an interesting question,
My dictionary defines AWARE as: concious, not ignorant, having knowledge,
well-informed.
In relation to dyslexia I submit:-
Concious?- I would hazard a guess that the majority of our population have
atleast a sub concious awareness of the condition.
Not ignorant?- My guess would be that many of those remain ignorant of any
detail.
Having knowledge?- Some would suggest a degree of knowledge. Is it current
and valid? Is it knowledge of the condition AND the possible negative
consequences if it is not recognised and understood? Is it theoretical,
practical or experiential knowledge? From where was the knowledge gained?
Well-informed?- By what/whose criteria? Informed of what, technicalities,
practicalities, consequences, success and failure?
James.....what would your own definition be, or are you undecided?
I believe that the majority of the population are aware of the word, few are
aware of the meaning it's complexities and what it means to be dyslexic.
