Call for papers: GEOGRAPHIES OF RELIGION
RGS/IBG Conference, University of Sussex, January 2000
Proposals for papers are invited for a day long session at the RGS-IBG
2000 conference at the University of Sussex, UK (4-7 January 2000) on
'Geographies of Religion'. The session is sponsored and organised by
the Historical Geography Research Group, the Social and Cultural
Geography Research Group and the Urban Geography Research Group.
The session aims to re-think the relationships between
religion/spirituality/systems of belief and place/space in both
historical and contemporary societies. How do conceptualisations
of space and place inform religious identities? How
are religious identities lived through, and mediated by, different
spaces? What are the contested relationships between religion,
ethnicity and identity? How might geographers and others with
interests in these issues usefully address the geography of religion
into the new millenium? Papers may address a range of such questions
and themes, including:
Religious identity and Sacred Space
Religion, ethnicity and race
Geography, religion and ethics
Religion and the built environment
Religion and geographical practice
Alternative Spiritualities and Space
We encourage papers of both theoretical and empirical persuasions and
those which have a broad conception of religious beliefs and practice,
cultures and places.
Proposals for contributions, consisting of a title and short abstract
(150 words max) should be sent to one of the following convenors by
