Dear List,
In the treatment of patellofemoral pain, strenghtening the VMO is indeed
advocated as a primary procedure for normalising the 'existing imbalance'
between the VMO/VL muscles. This imbalance is held responsible for the
malalignment and lateral tracking of the patella.
A student of mine recently performed a minor exploration of the literature
on that subject and it looks that there is at present indeed little or no
scientific (statistical) evidence for that assumption. The only evidence is
empirical.
In my humble opinion this is definitely a discussion point for
evidence-based PT !
