I am a PT, not a DC. But...
One possible explaination, which some PTs believe as well, is that Carpal
Tunnel "syndrome" can be a double crush--pressure on the C6 and C7 cervical
nerve roots resulting in a "weakening" of the nerve and thus making it more
liable to injury distally--ie at the Carpal Tunnel. My thinking is that
this is not isolated pressure on the median nerve, which is what I think of
as carpal tunnel, but a double crush. I don't believe that manipulating
the cervical spine is the answer. Although, some PTs report success with
biofeedback to the upper traps and scalenes. I think that we all need to
be better at defining what the problem is--is it the median nerve in the
carpal tunnel or is it the cervical nerve roots? This is similar to
having thoracic muscles "spasms" refering pain to the chest, calling it
angina and saying that a manipulation can cure angina--again, we need to
make sure we are treating what we think we are treating.
