the SOM Research School of the University of Groningen. Would you

SOM (Systems, Organization and Management) is the joint graduate
school and research institute of the faculties of Management &
Organization, Economics and Spatial Sciences at the University of
Groningen. It has a good record of PhD completed dissertations.
The following PhD position is offered for non-Dutch applicants in
the Ubbo Emmius scholarship programme of internationalization of the
University of Groningen.

Title: Firm migrations in Europe
Description:
The aim of the research project is to describe and explain processes
of firm movements (firm relocations) in Europe, especially in the
United Kingdom, France and Germany, and to compare the results to
these processes in the Netherlands.
The accent of the study is on spatial patterns and spatial decision
making by the entrepreneurs.
The relationship between firm migration motives and the internal
functions of the firm have to be established and positioned in the
firm life cycle.
The project includes literature research, but also field research in
the form of interviews with key informants and managers of relocated
firms in the UK, France and Germany.
Requirements:
MSc degree in regional economics or economic geography from a
university in the UK, Germany or possibly France:
Fluent in English, and a fair active and passive knowledge of at least
one of the two languages which are relevant for this project, i.e.
French or German;
Preferably research experience in the field of firm location and/or
relocation or related subjects;
Good knowledge of regional economic and economic geographic research
methods.

Conditions:
The PhD scholarships are granted for a four-year period in which the
candidates will participate in the above mentioned project, leading
to a doctoral thesis (PdD thesis) The scholarship of the PhD amounts
to Dfl. 2.500,- a month.
