	The Public and the Environment: Citizens, Sustainability and Science

	THE ISSUES: It is widely recognised that a constructive dialogue
with the public is required to encourage more environmentally sustainable
behaviour. To engage the public fully in environmental debates, issues,
policy formulation and assessment requires effective dissemination of
information, public understanding, and opportunities for feedback and input
into policy at local and national levels. 

	This conference brings together the work of a number of key
geographers, environmentalists, and other social scientists with
practitioners and policy makers to explore the ways and effectiveness with
which the public is currently engaged in contemporary debates about the
environment, and how they receive and understand environmental information.
It is timely to consider how public involvement in the environmental debate
can be both developed and sustained, given the Government's strong interest
in increasing public participation.
