Call for Papers:

(Barcelona)

Workshop goals and objectives:
The case research workshop shall serve as a forum for the presentation
and discussion of original research on enterprises and organisations in
the transition economies of Central Asia and Eastern Europe.
The objective of this workshop is to further the understanding of
processes of economic restucturing and the use of case based research
for that purpose. The aim is to discuss management as well as public
policy issues related to Eastern European and Central Asian enterprises,
and in particular to Kazakstani ones.
The workshop is motivated by the following concerns:

Stimulate academic contacts between researchers from Central Asia and
the European Union as well as other countries , and to develop KIMEP as
a key contributor to this exchange.

Reinvigorate the use of case based research within the areas of
interest of research and teaching at KIMEP.

Support the development of case studies as a basis for management
education in transition economies at KIMEP and beyond.

We invite papers reporting on case based research on enterprises and
organisations within this broad definition of interest, i.e. within any
of the typical business school subjects.
The workshop will include both research and teaching cases. Submissions
should clearly indicate the purpose of the case.
The workshop will be arranged in thematical sessions covering the topics
of the papers presented.
The best papers will be published in KIMEPís Journal of Central Asian
Management to inform academia worldwide on processes taking place in
both private and public sector organizations in transition economies.

Workshop format:
The workshop will be held as a two-day academic workshop at KIMEP,
September 25-26, 1999. The total number of participants is to be 25
selected by a review committee.

The workshop will be arranged in thematical sessions; each author will
give a short presentation of his/her case research followed by comments
from the discussant and rounded up by an open discussion.

Practical information:
The workshop will be organized jointly by KIMEP (Kazakhstan Institute of
Management, Economics and Strategic Research), the Copenhagen Business
School and ESADE (Barselona).
The organizers will provide for room and board at the premises of KIMEP
during the workshop. Limited assistance funds might be provided on
request to contribute to reducing travel costs of workshop participants.

The above number of expected participants is set so as to keep it to a
manageable size. Title and a 1-3 page abstract of paper should be
forwarded no later than May 15, 1999. Notification of acceptance of
papers will be given no later that June 15, 1999.
