The Faculty occupies a purpose built, new building enabling a broad range of A&D practice and is situated 25 mins from Kings Cross. We are seeking a creative leader to play an active role in the development of our work in digital arts, new media, interaction and interface design. The successful applicant will create and develop the research centre which consolidates and encourages work including consultancy activity. It will function alongside the Faculty's other research interests which include in addition to Design; work on Art and Site, Art & Design Histories and Art and Movement Therapies.
You will be an active researcher with an entrepreneurial attitude wishing to make a significant impact on new practice scenarios. You will be involved in the development of the socio-cultural debate which underpins thoughtful approaches to studio activity. Your own practice/research programme will be well established and you will be able to demonstrate your ability to lead this exciting venture.

PURPOSE OF THE POST
To enhance the research capability of the Faculty
To lead the Faculty's consultancy activities
MAIN DUTIES
Liaise with current researchers and develop strategies to support and enhance their work.
Identify new developments.
Lead bids to external funding agencies.
Supervise the work of research assistants.
Supervise research students as appropriate.
Coordinate the submission for UOA 64 of the RAE 2001.
Publicize the work of the centre and, as appropriate, organize conferences, papers, etc. to focus and disseminate outcomes.

THE CONTEXT
THE RESEARCH CENTRE
The proposed Research Centre will bring together the work of a groups of artist and designers who are currently working within and around the area of "new media" and/or "new practice". These include product designers involved in interface design, researchers exploring new methods of working with integrated digital media, interactive CDROM and Web based work; which are supplemented by exhibitions of interactive artworks and papers at national and international conferences.
The centre will focus this work and provide a core of intellectual and practical support to these workers. It will provide a forum for their development and help to ensure that their work is centred upon RAE accredited outcome. The unit will also act as a facilitating agency to enable staff to become more research active.
The Faculty also seeks to develop its consultancy activities into a more coherent format and it is thought that the centre should lead this development by the acquisition of directed consultancy work which will increase our portfolio and focus our expertise. We also see the centre attracting research funding from national and international research bodies as well as encouraging sponsorship from industrial and commercial contacts .
Publicizing and developing the work of this group will be a key role of the post holder who will lead this development and play a key role in establishing its reputation.
THE FACULTY
The Faculty of Art of Design has a long history of art school practice which is combined with the advantages of belonging to a dynamic and forward looking University. It has, in recent years, widened its horizons and enhanced its international reputation for provision for students at various levels of art, design and the arts therapies. It continues to serve its national and regional community as well as attracting international students.
We have recently taken up residence in a purpose built new building on the Hatfield Campus of the University. This building will support a full spectrum of Art and Design activity which ranges broadly across the Fine and Applied Arts, 2D, 3D Design as well as work in the Art and Movement Therapies. Some 1100 student and 45 establishment academic staff are combined with a wide variety of visiting tutors all of whom are well supported by administrative, clerical and technical teams.
The newly upgraded computer suites have been conceived to support a variety of digitally aided practice. The facilities includes a focused 3D modelling and multimedia workshop with stations devoted to digital video, sound editing and animation. The graphics facility runs group software such as Quark, Freehand and PhotoShop. The specialist 3D Suite runs Vellum, TurboCad as well as StrataStudio. A general studio also runs group sets of PhotoShop, FreeHand, xRes and Pagemill. These machines output to A3 and A4 lasers for proofing and to banner and A2 colour printers. There is also the facility to print to video and link to video projectors for presentation with much current work focussed on Web outcomes.
The 3D workshops within the Faculty range broadly from machine shops to sculpture studios with facilities for working with wood, metal, plastics, plaster, textiles, ceramics, glass with spray painting and screen printing. The specialist 2D workshops have dying, steaming and silk screen whilst the printmaking studio has litho as well as the usual craft printing processes.
