The notice I got from Radio 4 before I did the interview this afternoon says
:
100 million available in current year. 70-80 million used to modernise A&E
departments; 20-30 million goes on other bits of primary care inc NHS direct
9the other 330 million over 2-3 years)
It'll be spent on special areas for kids, access to x-ray, layout and
refurbishment, video surveillance and alarm systems. Maybe NHS direct
telephone points will be incorporated in to departments.
By the end of this initiative ony 5 out of 222 A&E depts will be without
admission wards !!!!( my exclamation marks not theirs)
Examples given included Liverpool, Ipswich, Sheffield North, Royal London,
Croydon, Southampton (got 2 million by the way) and Bristol.
"Biggest Programe in the history of the NHS, covering every part of the
country. By April 2000 they'll all be modernised or well on the way,
patients will get help more quickly, effecytively and with greater privacy
than ever before"
Team of professionals will spearhead the work led by Dr Lambert at the
Norfolk and Norwich.

Hmmmm, my wife called it a 'whitewash' which I thought was quite good for a
layperson's interpretation. Sure there is a strong cosmetic component
here but either way it is a benefit for the specialty. Acrtually I think
the winter spin has helped us.
