While there are some exceptions, most of the posters to j18 seem to be
firmly anti-capitalist, i.e., in favor of its worldwide overthrow. The
implication, of course, is that capitalism can't be shorn of some
discernible list of objectionable features and THEN embraced by the good
people on j18. In other words, capitalism is, in this view, INHERENTLY
evil and therefore beyond 'reform.'
The solution favored by the j18 majority is presumably a Marxist one--some
form of socialism/communism. No one has mentioned, though, that this
presumed alternative to capitalism itself has a rather grim real-world
record--Stalin's Soviet Union, Mao's China, Pol Pot's Cambodia, Ortega's
Nicaragua, Castro's Cuba, North Korea, and the list goes on. When the Wall
fell in '89, behind it was found something less than an
economic/social/environmental Eden.
Why, then, have we had no discussion on j18 as to how the only known
ALTERNATIVE to world capitalism--world socialism/communism--might itself be
'reformed' to cure those observed defects wherever it has been tried? Or
is it, too, perhaps beyond 'repair' in the eyes of the j18 majority?
Seems to me we need to talk about the shortcomings of not just capitalism
but of its alternative(s), as well.
