Social Role Valorization is a term devised by W.
Wolfensberger, who became unhappy with the term
normalisation -- as other correspondents have said.
Unfortunately, professionals have climbed on to the
bandwagon of promoting this perspectives with training of
other professionals and care staff (ie PASS and PASSING).
Wolfensberger has in recent years condemned this hijacking
of care services -- 'the post-primary production society'.
A few years ago I met with a couple of Scandavian people
with learning difficulties who were involved with the
earlier normalisation movement, as a result I have
revisited the work of Nirje, a much more gentle and
possibly spiritual approach to valuing people with learning
difficulties. However, don't mention Nirje to an SRV
evangelist!
