CALL FOR PAPERS
The CARDO International Conference on
HOUSING, WORK AND DEVELOPMENT:THE ROLE OF
HOME-BASED ENTERPRISES
26-28 April 2000, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK
Home-based work is currently one of the key issues in poverty
alleviation and has been identified for special attention by the UN's
Urban Poverty Forum. By bringing together a wide range of knowledge
and experience from around the world, a broad range of issues
relevant to home-based enterprises will be addressed. The conference
will adopt a critical approach to current policies on working in the
home and will consequently generate guidelines to be promoted through
international agencies.
PROPOSED TOPICS
Employment policy and the encouragement of home-based enterprises
· Housing policy related to home-based enterprises
· The effect of environmental upgrading on home-based enterprises
· Rental housing as income generation
· Economic contribution of home-based enterprises at personal, household, neighbourhood, city and national level
· Employment conditions in home-based enterprises, exploitation, safety issues, incomes
· Environmental implications of home-based enterprises, positive and negative at household, neighbourhood, city and national levels
· Gender issues in home-based enterprises
· Child labour issues in home-based enterprises
· Home-working, piece working and the scattered factory
· Pollution, waste disposal and other externality issues in home-based enterprises
· Infrastructure demand and supply
CONTRIBUTORS
We welcome contributions from:
Academics and practitioners working in all parts of the world with an
interest in home-based enterprises
Supporters of home-based enterprises as a household survival or
poverty alleviation strategy; ·
Those who campaign against exploitation of home-based out-workers,
women and children; ·
Those concerned to limit working in the home and those wishing to
promote it; ·
Those whose experience of upgrading and other planning
projects can cast light on their effects on home-based enterprises.
It is hoped that many of the papers will be of publishable quality.
Indeed efforts will be made to compile collections for publication.
SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS AND PAPERS
Delegates are invited to submit abstracts of 500 words to Ms Justine
Coulson ([log in to unmask]) at CARDO by 1st June, 1999. Please
send a hard copy and either an email or diskette copy in Word for
Windows 2, Word 6 or Wordperfect 5. Those who have submitted
abstracts by that date will be notified of their acceptance by 2nd
