Hi folks,
This is a brief note to say that the Design Research Society has
issued a final Call for Papers on the topic of CREATIVITY at
this year's IDATER conference. The details are below. As well
as academics, this may be of interest to design practitioners,
who are encouraged to participate.
...and the usual apologies for x-posting should you receive more
than one copy...

IDATER 99 - FINAL CALL FOR PAPERS
For the third successive year, the Design Research Society is
supporting a day session as part of the IDATER conference. This
has proved a highly successful final day to the conference which
attracts design researchers worldwide. In addition, DRS
organises the Keynote Speaker from the ranks of design
practitioners.
IDATER 99 is the twelfth annual International Conference on
Design and Technology Educational Research and Curriculum
Development organised by the Department of Design and Technology
at Loughborough University, UK. The conference will take place
from 23-25 August 1999.
IDATER is an established national and international forum for
Design and Technology Education and attracts a wide audience
from all those who are involved with, or are interested in, the
development of design and technology curricula and pedagogy in
schools, colleges and higher education throughout the world.
The DRS session will be held on the final day of the conference,
Wednesday 25 August 1999.
THE DRS THEME FOR IDATER 99
Design research is growing in the universities but its results
have yet to be integrated by practising designers. The aim of
this session is to inform the discipline by the publication of
high quality papers dealing with issues of interest to both
practising designers and academics.
This year, we are particularly interested in papers that deal
broadly with creativity in design. This includes, but is not
limited to, the following topics:
* what is creativity in design?
* are there different kinds of creativity across subject
boundaries?
* designerly ways of thinking
* constraints on creativity eg. through design guidelines or
standards
* the management of creativity
* how creativity can be fostered and supported
* information which may support creativity
* design methods and creativity
* case studies of design creativity in action in teaching
* case studies of design creativity in action in design
practice
* creative collaborations between universities and design
practices or industry
Papers are not limited to academic researchers, and
contributions from practising designers in consultancy and
industry are encouraged.
Conference papers will be blind refereed. DRS referees are
coordinated by Dr. David Durling of Staffordshire University.
Initial enquiries about the content of papers may be addressed
to him at <[log in to unmask]>.
Authors should initially submit a ONE PAGE OUTLINE of the
proposed paper to the Conference Organiser, shown below. The
outline should indicate the nature and scope of the paper.
Outline papers are being accepted NOW.
The deadline for outline paper submissions is 26 February 1999.
(If the outline is accepted, a full paper will be required by 7
April 1999).
Outline papers (clearly marked 'DRS') must be sent to the
conference organiser from whom application forms and guidelines
are available:
