Bolton Business School 2nd Annual Conference on Social Organisation
Call for Papers 'Critical Issues in Globalisation' 14th - 15th
October, 1999 Background to the Conference The First Annual Conference
of the Bolton Business School Social Organisation Group, was held at
Darwen, Lancashire, UK during April of 1998. This was very
successful, attracting a range of exciting papers from both the UK and
Europe. We are pleased to announce that the Second Annual Conference
will be held at the Egerton House Hotel, Bolton on the 14th and 15th
of October 1999, and invite you to attend, either as a presenter, or
as a delegate. Issues and Concerns The literature, either on or
relating to, globalisation continues to grow. Academic journals and
books continue to publish in the area, which is fast becoming a major
issue for businesses in the UK, as it is throughout the developed
world. The advent of e-commerce, advanced communication technologies,
and the Internet had led to a potential exponential growth in the
marketplace for businesses. But, there are many important
non-technological issues that also need to be considered, if an
organisation is considering a strategy for globalisation, e.g.
cultural and ethical considerations. This conference will cover both
technological and non-technological debates, covering both theoretical
and practical issues that organisations are likely to encounter when
developing and implementing a strategy for globalisation. Structure
of the Event We anticipate there will be approximately 30 papers that
will be accepted for presentation. There will be a keynote address to
open the conference. Each of the two days will be divided into
streams, covering different themes. Each presenter will have 30
minutes in which to give their paper, and answer any questions from
the audience. A plenary event will be held at the end of the
conference, where it is envisaged that participants will have the
opportunity to explore, and exchange views on, the issues raised
during the conference. Paper Submission Authors are invited to
submit papers of approximately 4000-5000 words, pertaining to both
theoretical and practical research in any of the areas outlined below.
Case studies are welcome. We are particularly keen to receive papers
from practitioners, as well as academics. Abstracts must be submitted
for approval by 7th April 1999. The Social Organisation Group of
Bolton Business School holds conferences with numbers strictly
limited, to encourage a friendly, 'intimate' atmosphere. As such, the
conference is an ideal platform for inexperienced presenters who are
perhaps at the start of their research career, in addition to more
experienced researchers. One stream of the conference will be
dedicated to first-time presenters. Please indicate on your
manuscript if you wish your paper to be considered for the 'first-time
presenters' stream. Areas of Interest Areas of interest include, but
are not limited to: *	Virtual organisations in the global marketplace
*	Developing a theoretical foundation for globalisation *	The global
village & strategic planning *	Technology and a shrinking world
*	Economic, political and cultural integration *	The role of
information technology within global strategy *	Capitalism and
democratisation *	Ethnographies of peoples and places *	Re-engineering
multinationals *	Globalisation rhetoric *	International business:
planning 'back from the future' *	Separate spheres: languages,
cultures, values *	Dynamics and challenges in global branding
*	Trans-national and trans-cultural research methodologies
*	Distribution and logistics *	The Internet and e-commerce *	Ethical
issues: child labour, sourcing, fair trade, operating standards
*	Globalisation or national responsiveness? *	Making sense of material
cultures *	Boundaries and borders, trade and identity Preparation of
the Manuscript The abstract should be formatted for A4 size paper,
using 12 point Times New Roman font. Each submission must have: *	A
title *	An abstract *	Name and addresses of all authors, their e-mail
addresses, telephone number and fax number Author biographical
information is not required with the abstract, but may be supplied, if
desired, with accepted papers (this should not exceed 10 single spaced
lines). Please ensure that your abstract conforms to the above
requirements, otherwise it will be returned to authors who may
subsequently miss the 7th April 1999 submission deadline. After
notification of provisional acceptance, authors need to submit the
full paper by 4th June 1999. This will be blind refereed. After
notification of acceptance, authors need to submit the camera-ready
copy of their paper by 1st September 1999. Submission of the
Manuscript Abstracts should be submitted by e-mail, fax, or on disk by
post, to arrive by 7th April 1999. Faxes must be typed and double
spaced. Provisional full papers should be submitted by 4th June 1999
in Microsoft Word version 2, version 6, or version 8 - either by email
or on a disk. Final versions of accepted papers should be submitted
by 1st September 1999 both on disk, and as a camera-ready hard copy.

Roman font throughout: Title - 18 point, bold, centred Author details
