Dear Christopher: as to your point 2), you're quite right. I bow to your
superior observation and can only plead haste (my email account is
long-distance-billed) and careless observation: I didn't reread Delaporte's
text, either. By "slightly jacquard-woven" (did I really say "slightly"?) I
meant with woven-in patterns, widely spaced; and it probably IS silk. The
term "slub" refers to an uneven thread thickness which produces a somewhat
uneven and lumpy weave, which it seems to me is evident in the detail of the
"voile" itself.
Incidentally, when traveling in France in 1976 we missed, by only a couple of
weeks, the celebration at Chartres of the gift of the voile by Charles the
Bald in 976: I have a flier for the occasion (very simple, on cheap paper)
which I treasure...ifI'd known it was to occur we'd have scheduled the trip
rather differently.
Cheers, Elizabeth
