**Apologies for the cross posting**
EARL's Networked Services Policy Task Group, in association with the Library Association and UKOLN, have pleasure in announcing a
series of discussion forums for the beginning of 1999
ABOUT THE DISCUSSION FORUMS
Public libraries today face complex policy decisions when developing their approach to the provision of access to networked resources for
their users. Questions arise on issues such as: charging for Internet access and added-value services; equality of access to and quality of
networked information and services; filtering and security. Over the next few months, the EARL/UKOLN/LA Networked Services Policy
Task Group will be running a series of DISCUSSION FORUMS to offer practical support in identifying issues and actions which will help
library staff to develop local policies for the implementation of the New Library Network. The Group is also publishing a series of Issues
Papers looking at a range of topics associated with access to networked resources to help in the decision-making process.
There will be three forums:
3 February 1999: 10.00 - 4.30
Equality of access to networked resources (held in association with the Library Association Equal Opportunities sub-committee)
Venue: City of Westminster Archives
Cost: £35.00
18 February 1999: 1.30 - 4.30
Charging and access to networked resources
Venue: City of Westminster Archives
Cost: £25.00
**NB special rate of £50.00 if booking for both of the above seminars!**
13 April 1999: 12.30 - 4.30
Information quality and access to networked resources
(held in association with the Quality Forum)
Venue: John Clare Theatre, Peterborough Central Library
Cost: to be decided
Each forum will provide a general presentation on the topic, a number of case studies showing different approaches, an opportunity for
group work to address issues and a closing session to agree possible action lines and policies.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Discussion forums are intended primarily for library staff who are responsible for service management and whose roles include the
development of policy and strategy for the delivery of networked services. This could include managers of library systems, reference and
information, children's and local studies services, staff who are involved in the preparation of Annual Library Plans, training and those
whose work includes the development of ICT strategies for the service.
