The Research Unit for Global Studies, Department of Sociology,
Manchester Metropolitan University, UK, is presenting an International
Conference on Globalisation & Identities to be held on June 30th to
July 2nd 1999
The aim of this conference is to explore how encounters with other
cultures, linked to the intensification of globalizing forces and
growing transnational exchanges, create situations
where some people feel that their own local identities - whether these
are grounded in gender, class, regional, ethnic, national, religious
or other realities - are being challenged or problematized. This
broad theme might generate many possible lines of enquiry, including
the following:
-Which groups are most likely to be compelled to confront issues of
identity either because of their extreme exposure to globalizing
forces or their unique social and historical situations, and in what
ways and why?
- What are the range of possible outcomes for those immediately involved
and how can these be explained? Are local identities lost,
marginalized, consolidated, regenerated or blended to
create new forms? Indeed, does the notion of the "local" continue to
possess any meaning ?
-What wider social or political consequences are likely to result from
the crises or challenges provoked by encounters in global social
space: the rise of new global actors and forms of protest, the
weakening of nation states, new or revived inter or intra-group
conflicts, reduced or intensified social marginality, etc?
